Bafoussam landslide: Biya reacts promptly; comforts victims.
Following the unfortunate landslide that occurred in Gouache village, Bafoussam III Subdivision of the West Regions on the night of October 28, 2019, the President of the Republic, Paul Biya promptly reacted by dispatching an inter-ministerial assessment mission after sending a condolence message to the people of the Region. Led by Territorial Administration Minister, Paul Atanga Nji, the mission visited the Bafoussam regional hospital where the survivors are undergoing treatment and corpses of the dead deposited. Going by official information, as at October 30, some 43 deaths had been recorded with eight survivors admitted at the intensive care unit of the hospital. Of the 43 deaths, six are men, 10 women with four of them reportedly pregnant, 11 boys and 15 girls between the ages of six and 16. A hospital official told reporters that 32 of the corpses have been duly identified. Some 50 persons are reported missing but the rescue mission on site hoped to find them within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, West Region Governor, Augustine Awa Fonka, has upon the instructions of President Paul Biya, dispatched rescue missions to the site once informed of the situation.
Mission visits hospital
For better coordination and apt surveillance, victims of the landslide are all currently at the Bafoussam regional hospital where corpses of those killed are also deposited. Accompanied by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Celestine Ketcha Courtes, Governor Awa Fonka and a host of other administrative officials, Minister Atanga Nji visited all the survivors, transmitting to them the condolence message of the Head of State. “The President of the Republic has sent his message of comfort. Do not be afraid as the Good Lord saved your lives, you will be fine soon. The State will shoulder all your bills; so you do not have to pay anything. The President will accompany you people all the way,” he told each of the victims as he visited them.
Fifty six-year-old Victor Takou, who suffered a left eye and elbow injury and is admitted to hospital, together with his three children ( two girls and a boy), said the situation happened when they were already in bed sleeping. Speaking in tears, the man said his eldest daughter who was in Upper Sixth died as a result of the landslide.
Other survivors whom the Minister comforted include 11-year-old Junior Singhé, 12-year-old Arnel Foudou Gestalone who was pulled out from the rubble miraculously still alive, three-year-old Chandoulin Fosso and nine- year old Christel Nounfor. All survivors are at the intensive care unit of the hospital. Most of them are nursing fractures and bruises.
Assessment of site
A total of 13 houses are reported to have been completely destroyed by the landslide. on October 30, 2019, Territorial Administration Minister, together with the Ministers of Housing and Urban Development, and State Property and Land Tenure, West Governor and other officials, visited the site to assess the situation, a report of which will be forwarded to hierarchy for in-depth measures intended to prevent such disasters. The incident occurred in a swampy site located near a slope. With rains on Sunday October 27 and on Monday October 28, the ground became loose, giving way to the landslide. Trucks continue working on the site with health personnel as the rescue mission is still ongoing. The quarter head of the neighborhood, Kengne, expressed fears that no one trapped beneath the earth as a result of the landslide may be found alive.
Security measures adopted
Informed by the situation, an urgent evacuation of persons near the site who too are resident either on the slope or in the swamps, was ordered. Minister Atanga Nji said evacuation of the area is the best option given that studies indicate the risk of another landslide in the near future if heavy rains persist.
“Human life is more precious than property. We can always replace property and not human life. High evacuation of the area is the first recommendation”. Other personalities have visited the village extending their heart-felt sympathies to victims.
