GICAM solicits French support to reconstruct NW, SW.
The Cameroon employers’ union known by the French acronym, GICAM, has urged France to make available a portion of its Debt Reduction Development Contract (C2D) money to Cameroon for the rebuilding of the North West and South West Regions. The English speaking Regions, it should be recalled, have been in a war situation for nearly three years now since what started as a lawyers’ and teachers’ strike, morphed into an armed conflict. The President of GICAM, Celestin Tawamba, made the plea when he met the French Foreign Minister, Jean Yves Le Drian, who was on a two-day working visit to the country recently. Tawamba explained that the importance of such a gesture cannot be overemphasized given the enormous socio-economic destruction that has happened in the two concerned Regions as a result of the War.
Government has said it is committed to fixing the social and economic fabric of the Regions with some authorities saying about FCFA 3,500 billion is expected to see that happen. GICAM, months ago, published a report detailing the damage caused to the economy of the North West and South West Regions.
The body also made proposals on how the situation could be prevented from further deteriorating. The C2D programme is a French government debt relief mechanism intended to assist poor countries fund their development projects. Cameroon is amongst 22 countries across the world that benefit from the programme that is run by the French Development Agency. Le Drian, it would be recalled, during his Cameroon visit announced French support to the tune of FCFA 30 billion in efforts to fix the economy of the Far North Region ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency.
