University dons seek ways to protect intellectual property.
As part of weeklong activities marking the 2019 World Property Week, officials from the World Intellectual Property Organisation, WIPO, have schooled Cameroonian university dons on the best techniques and strategies of unlocking the Africa intellectual property potential and guaranteeing its safety. According to the African Bureau’s Regional Adviser for the World Intellectual Property Organization, Yves Gobeyou, the forum gives an opportunity for experienced and cub researchers to network and buttress their efforts. He observed that “this forum intends to equip university lecturers in Cameroon as well as research institutions to better protect their research results in order to contribute to the economic development of the country. The purpose is to discuss the importance of institutional intellectual property policy in universities and research institutions.” Participants at the forum were drilled on new ways of safeguarding the contents of their works in this digital age. The brainstorming forum comes at a time when plagiarism, piracy and other academic misconducts are quite rampant in the university milieu. The advent of technology has also enabled the development of software that can easily detect plagiarized texts in a write-up, but the innovation has also brought novel ways of intellectual theft. The dons have challenged universities and research institutions to develop intellectual protection policies and step up efforts to let the researcher benefit from his or her hard-earned intellectual work. Through the gathering, “we want to enable universities and research institutions to generate the protection, creation and commercialization of the intellectual property asset,” asserted Yves Gobeyou, the World Intellectual Property Organisation Official. Themes covered at the forum included a review of the International Intellectual Property Policies, developing intellectual property policies, specificities and challenges peculiar to the Cameroonian university system. The 2019 World Property Week that began on Monday October 21, ended on October 25.
