Improving Penja Pepper: Over 472 million project launched.
A project to improve on the Sanitary Phytosanitary (SPS) quality of Penja Pepper in Cameroon and to facilitate access to the international markets has been launched. The FCFA 472,514,553 project launched in Douala on Thursday October 24, was also an opportunity for stakeholders in the Penja pepper production chain to be edified about the project.
In effect, the project will bring Penja Pepper in line with the international SPS market requirements without altering its intrinsic quality based on the traditional system, improve on the economic situation of Penja Pepper growers so as to accelerate progress towards eradicating poverty. It will also promote best practices at all stages of the Penja Pepper value chain from production to exportation which will result in the production of good quality pepper in accordance with international regulations. More so, it will focus on identifying SPS risks at all stages of production, harvesting and packaging. Capacity building of various actors in the sector to apply good practices at all stages of production has also been envisaged in the project.
Financed by the Standard and Trade Development Facility (STDF), other sponsors include, Penja Pepper Geographical Indication Group (IGPP), Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Crafts (CCIMA), the Ministry of Trade, and COLEAP’s Fit For Market SPS programme. As explained by the coordinator of the project, Maud Delacollette, STDF will provide FCFA 327,750,000 while the other partners will provide the rest of the money. She explained that the direct beneficiaries are operators involved in the entire value chain of Penja Pepper production and marketing.
For his part, the President of the IGPP, Metomo Elogo Rene Claude, added that the project is timely as it will generally improve the Penja Pepper. He said that competition in the world market is stiff and the project will build the capacities of stakeholders so as to meet up with the challenge. While the Secretary General of CCIMA, Halidou Bello, disclosed that they would provide technical support for the success of the project.
