PNDP rewards excellence in local governance.

The Dibombari Council in the Littoral, Pitoa in the North and Ngaoundal in the Adamawa Regions have, for the second time, stood out from the over 360 participating councils at this year’s Performance desk Competition. Their effectiveness in budget and account management, commendable governance and transparency, as well as the appropriation of the required programme approach enabled the said municipal councils to gain the favour of the jury. Apart from the three national winners, 27 other municipal councils also won prizes for standing out at regional levels. Two most performing councils bagged home FCFA 50 Million each, per region while another council that has recorded the highest progress also took home FCFA 25 million per Region. Despite the present predicaments facing the North West and South West Regions, some councils have recorded relative growth. According to the PNDP ratings, the Elak-Oku Council in Bui Division is the most performing in the North West Region. Meantime, the Mbengwi Council comes second. The progressiveness prize was awarded to the Misaje Council. Next door, in the South West Region, the Limbe One Council grabbed the first position and was trailed by the Tombel Council. The Mbonge Council got the prize for the most progressed Council in the Region. The Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey, chaired a dinner on Friday November 7, to officially hand out cheques to the winners.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Economy Minister appreciated the World Bank for steering development in the country through the PNDP.

For his part, the World Bank Director of Operations for Cameroon, Abdoulaye Seck, said the novelty to reward good performance instills in municipal councils, the desire for growth. “The project is an excellent catalyst for effective management of public funds,” the World Bank Director stated. He also saluted the participating councils and urged them to begin preparing for the next edition right away. Seck urged this year’s winners to make good use of the money received for the prizes. He also advised that effective policies and administration be put in place to attract more funding. The National Selection Committee that works in collaboration with Regional Selection Committees is steered by David Abouema à Tchoyi. The National Community-Driven Development Programme’s Performance Desk Competition seeks to reinforce effective management of public finances and a participatory approach to development.

Celebrating his prize, the Mayor of MIsaje Council, Mgbata Sammy Nforkemba, said the FCFA 25Million will be of great help to his municipality. He expressed regret that their desired project might not be carried out due to the prevailing situation.
