Legal icon, Ben Muna, laid to eternal rest.

One of Cameroon’s most prominent lawyers and firebrand opposition politician, Barrister Bernard Acho Muna, who died last month, has been laid to rest. The former President of the Cameroon Bar Association was buried Saturday in his native Ngyembo village, Momo Division of the North West Region. More than three hundred lawyers from home and abroad accompanied the body of the fallen legal colossus, who many referred to as a patriarch. Through eulogies read during the different funeral services, speakers described the late Ben Muna not only as a legal mentor, but a faithful brother, parent, friend and politician, with exceeding dedication and honesty. Many said they remember him not only for his efforts in ensuring respect for Common Law values, but also as a tenacious politician who spoke truth to power. Meanwhile, before the burial Saturday, the mortal remains of the onetime Magistrate in the former West Cameroon had been given official legal honours at the Supreme Court in Yaounde. The Supreme Court ceremony that took place Friday brought together hundreds of members of the Cameroon Bar Association, family members, friends as well as other top officials of Cameroon’s  judiciary corps.

Barrister Ben Muna, it would be recalled, died on October 6, 2019 after about a week in hospital following a malaise.

About the Lawyer and Politician

Ben MUna is one of the sons of the onetime President of the National Assembly, Solomon Tandeng Muna. Apart from his exploits in the judiciary, Ben Muna also lived a significant part of his life in the political arena. He was one of the founding fathers of the opposition Social Democratic Front party, SDF. He later quit the party to form the Alliance for Progressive Forces, APF, on which ticket he ran for the 2011 presidential election. He relinquished the party’s chairmanship in 2015 and eventually retired from active politics. His death follows that of his younger brother and revered cardiologist, Professor Wali Muna, in February this year. One of his major international assignments was his appointment, in 2013, by the United Nations Secretary General to the body’s Commission of Inquiry on the socio-political crisis in the Central African Republic, CAR.
