Buea mourns Gouache mudslide victims.
Saturday November 9, 2019 was observed in Buea and the entire South West Region as National Mourning Day. Flags at the Divisional Office Buea, Buea Council, South West Gendarmerie Legion, Central Police Office and other military units all flew at half-mast. Many citizens could be seen wearing black attires and going about their business unperturbed. They said the black garments were their own way of paying their last respects to those that perished at the Gouache mudslide in Bafoussam.
Chofor Sonia Bih, a business woman in Buea, said that during her family routine morning devotion on Saturday, they prayed for the repose of the souls of all those that perished in the Gouache mudslide incident. She added that she felt bad because a lot of people are dying in natural disasters. She cited the persistent floods that have kept part of Far North on its feet and the many road accidents that claimed lives daily. They equally remembered in their prayers those that have died as a result of the crisis rocking the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon.
Ewande Becky Makembe Akwo, Limbe inhabitant, said that for 43 dead within a twinkle of an eye was enough for the State to set aside a day for national mourning.
Though it was business as usual in Buea, many entertainment centres operated with very low or no music at all. Through the ever bustling Clerk’s Quarter, Buea Town, Great Soppo, Molyko and Mile 17 Bus Station, there was general quietness. One bartender indicated that it was their own way of observing the National Day of Mourning.
