Non-Aligned Movement hails Cameroon’s peace efforts.
Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement have saluted the recent holding of the Major National Dialogue in Cameroon, calling it a significant step towards restoring peace in the crisis-hit North West and South West Regions. This was during the global body’s 18th summit of member countries which was held from October 25-26 in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. The Non-Aligned movement is a forum of 120 developing world states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. During the Baku conference in which the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with the Islamic World at the External Relations Ministry represented Cameroon, attendees said they reaffirmed their recognition and support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cameroon.
On the Anglophone crisis, the Non-Aligned Movement leaders condemned the continuous violence ongoing in the two English-speaking Regions of Cameroon. They expressed deep concerns about incessant attacks on members of the defence and security forces and civilians by armed separatists who are fighting for the establishment of a putative state called Ambazonia. The summit participants also expressed satisfaction with the raft of measures being taken by President Paul Biya not only to pull out the two affected Regions from the shackles of the armed conflict, but to fix the socio-economic fibre of the area, and ensure a return to normalcy. They used the opportunity to thank the international community for the broad-based support accorded to the government of Cameroon, especially in the domain of humanitarian support for citizens displaced by the armed fighting. Meanwhile, the Baku summit discussed other issues including challenges affecting the movement in the post-cold war era. Four documents were adopted in the course of the gathering. The documents include: The Baku Final Act, Baku Political Declaration, the Palestinian declaration and the document of gratitude and solidarity to the government and people of Azerbaijan.
