The Goethe Institute revisits German colonialism in Africa.

The German Cultural Center in Cameroon called the Goethe Institute is set to bring memories of German colonisation in Africa. This will be made possible during a cultural week organised by the Goethe Institute, scheduled to take place from the 9-16 November 2019.
The cultural week falls in line with the efforts made by Germany through their cultural centers in Africa to ensure that reconciliation is achieved by revisiting history using arts as a tool.
The project is set to bring together artists from over six countries in Africa which were victims of German colonisation.
“The Goethe institute wants the burden of memory concerning German colonialism in Africa to bring together artists from different African countries which went through German colonization. It is a difficult subject, very sensitive but we have experienced in Germany that it is good and positive to talk about history, to be aware of what has happened and to create new perspectives for a common future. The Goethe Institute is only creating the platform, the artistic content of the cultural week and the decisions of which productions will be given privileges is in the hands of the curatorial team which are 3 curators from South Africa, Kenya and Cameroon”, said Fabian Mühlthaler, the Director of Goethe Institute, Cameroon.
He emphasised that this initiative is not to repay Africans for the destruction the Germans caused in Africa during the colonial era, but a way to create a discourse among Africans that can help them discuss together and speak out.
According to Princess Marilyn Douala Manga Bell, one of the curators of the program, the project will give Africans the opportunity to share their burden and bring about change in the narrative of African history.
“It has been interesting to be given the opportunity to have a conversation among ourselves. From an African perspective, this to me is a rare opportunity, one that deserves to be acknowledged and commended”, said Nontobeko Ntombela, a curator from South Africa
The cultural event entirely will focus on THE BURDEN OF MEMORY; CONSIDERING GERMAN COLONIAL HISTORY IN AFRICA.
