9 February 2020 polls: SDF will not boycott! Fru Ndi endorses candidatures all sitting MPs and mayors!

The SDF is a master of equivocation. While the media was announcing its boycott of the announced 9 February 2002 twin polls, citing an August 2019 NEC decision to that effect, the party’s think-tank was at work brainstorming on what to do about investiture of its candidates so as to beat the 24 November deadline.

The answer came in a document signed on 11 November by Party Chairman, Ni John Fru Ndi who is also chairman of the Investiture committee. Given the exceptional circumstances of the convening of the polls, it was stated in a press release that all sitting elected officials automatically had their candidacies retained. All MPs and councillors who contested in the last polls are called upon to compile their candidature files.

“Considering the exceptional circumstances in which we find ourselves;

Considering the constitution, rules and regulations of the party as well as our convention resolutions;

In my capacity as the Chairman of the Investiture Committee and having regards to exceptional circumstances in which we find ourselves, I hereby grant investiture with a right to revision, to all the existing members of the National Assembly and instruct them to compile their candidature files accordingly. I hereby also instruct that all existing and duly invested Mayors, Deputy Mayors, and municipal councillors should as well compile their candidature files”, Fru Ndi stated in the communique of 11 November.

The SDF called on any elected party official not willing to run for the election to immediately inform the regional executive in writing so that due process is engaged to make known the availability of such a position to the concerned electoral district.

The compilation and composition of prospective party candidates and lists will be coordinated at the national level by Hon. Joshua Osih, Senator Tsomelou jean, Mayor Kumase John and Grace Ngwafor.

At the regional level, they will be coordinated as follows: Njong Donatus for NW; Maitre Suffo Benjamin for SW; Senator Ngam Honore for Littoral; Senator Buh Sule for the West; Senator Nkeze Emilia for the Centre; Senator Mochiggle Vanigansen for the Far North; Senator Haman Paul for the North; Senator Kemende for the Adamawa; Senator Kinyang George for the East; and Yvonne Muma Amabo for the South.

Regional reports are expected to reach the National Coordination latest 21 November. They will have to transmit the documents to the National President on or before 22 November for due process and in order to allow the invested candidates to pay their respective electoral deposits on time.

The communique lays to rest any speculation about an SDF boycott which was already being celebrated by separatists. It also lays bare the flexibility of the SDF in its decisions. It is also indication that there will be no new blood injected in the SDF team.
