New malaria research, diagnosis centre inaugurate.

Directors of Pasteur Institutes from 32 countries met in Yaounde November 12 for their 51st board meeting of the International Network of their institution, and equally to develop strategies for research and diagnosis.

Pierre-Marie Girard, International Vice President, Pasteur International Network, said the meeting was among other things to build some collaborative projects, better quality of research and also to raise funding since research is quite expensive. During the event, a new building to serve as centre for malaria research and diagnosis was also inaugurated by the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie. Dr. Sara Eyangoh, Scientific Director, Centre Pasteur, stated that one of their main achievements at the institute is on surveillance diseases. “What we are doing is how to better respond to the need of expertise and intervention in the Ministry of Health. For example, we have analysed the rapid diagnosed test for HIV diagnosis in Cameroon and after comparing around 12 tests, we are able to inform the Minister of Public Health which is better, she said.

The event follows week-long activities marking the 60th anniversary of Centre Pasteur in fighting infectious diseases in Cameroon and the sub region. The International Research Institute (known by its French acronym Centre Pasteur), is one of the few recognized vaccination facilities in Cameroon which carries out rare biomedical analysis. The centre draws a lot of people soliciting its services that are rarely offered elsewhere. According to Professor Elisabeth Carniel, General Manager of Centre Pasteur, the institution also hosts a school for lab technicians for the past three years. “We are the reference lab pathology in Cameroon like cholera, malaria, meningitis, HIV, hepatitis, diabetes etc. We receive around 500 people a day and our mission is public health. We also have as objective, research as we collaborate with many international organisations and institutions around the world to do research that are focused on pathologies common in Cameroon,” she noted. To carry out its rare diagnosis, the Centre Pasteur Cameroon which is a member of the Institut Pasteur International Network owns a reference laboratory for 26 pathologies in the country. The institution also boasts a laboratory for hygiene and environment which ensures that water and food consumed by Cameroonians is of good quality. The Centre Pasteur of Cameroon, created in 1959, is a Cameroonian public establishment with financial autonomy having annexes in Garoua and Douala.
