Promoting transparent elections: CONAC launches sensitisation campaign.
The National Anti-corruption Commission (NACC) has following the convening of the electorate for the February 9, 2020 twin elections, launched a sensitization caravan dubbed “Road Show” with the objective of schooling the population on electoral corruption.
Launched in Yaounde on November 18, 2019 by the Chairman of NACC, Rev. Dr. Dieudonne Massi Gams, the mobile sensitization caravans which all operate nationwide have been placed under the theme “Elected representatives of integrity for a better Cameroon”. NACC’s Chairman said the goal of the campaign is to stop the people of bad morality from being elected.
Going by the itinerary of the sensitization plan, NACC teams will till November 30, 2019 drive through major roads of the country with stops in towns and villages and other points of convergence to educate and sensitise the population. Going by the concept note by the campaign, the target audiences are Cameroonians of voting age, media persons, political party leaders, traditional authorities and the civil society.
The objective, the concept note indicates, is touching base with the electorate at the grassroots and enlightening them on the importance of voting persons of integrity into the councils and the National Assembly given the elections are proximity elections. “The idea of a mobile caravan is innovative and seeks to reach out to the population in the hinterland. The “Road show” seeks to raise public awareness of the evils of electoral corruption and the role of voters in the selection of honest, law-abiding and anti-corruption elected officials. It equally seeks to build popular support for the fight against corruption so that Cameroon reaches a critical mass of positive actors engaged against the ill”, partly highlights the concept note of the initiative.
With the transfer of competence to local authorities and government’s efforts at accelerating the process of decentralization, hence development in the country, the level of probity and integrity of those to be elected will therefore determine the quality of management of public assets placed at their disposal.
NACC through the campaign is acting in accordance with its mission of amongst other things conducting public education and awareness-raising activities in the fight against corruption as prescribed in Article 13 (1) of the text creating the commission.
