CAF awards: Seven Cameroonians nominated.
CAF awards: Seven Cameroonians nominated.
Seven Cameroonians have been nominated for the 28th edition of CAF’s annual awards which take the place on January 7, 2020 in Cairo, Egypt. The list of nominees was compiled by a panel of media and technical professionals and released by the Confederation of African Football, CAF, last week.
The list of nominees features several award categories for men’s and women’s football including: African player of the year, Coach of the Year, Youth Player of the year, National Team of the Year, Goal of the year, Africa Finest XI, Federation of the year and several new award categories which will recognize exceptional contributions to African football and inspiring individuals. The Interclubs Player of the Year Award has been reintroduced and will be dedicated to honouring key actors in CAF’s club competitions. Several Cameroonians are nominated in the various categories, notably Nchout Njoya Ajara who is up for the African Women’s Player of the Year Award.
The Valerenga forward has had a stellar season, helping Cameroon reach the knockout stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. She has been the main player for the Indomitable Lionesses in their run for the place at Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. She is joined in the category by the compatriot Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene who has equally had a decent season at both club and international level. Another nominee from Cameroon’s Women’s football team is head coach Alain Djeumfa who is up for the African Women’s Coach of the Year Award.
The Indomitable Lionesses are also up for the African Women’s Football team of the Year Award.
In the men’s category, Eric Maxime Choupo Moting and André Onana are up in a star- studded line-up that includes the likes of Sadio Mane (Senegal), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria), Jordan Ayew (Ghana), Mohammed Salah (Egypt) and a host of other players. André Onana was instrumental in Ajax Amsterdam’s run to the semifinal of last season’s UEFA Champions League while Choupo Moting helped Paris Saint Germain to the French League title last season. Cameroonian midfielder, Franck Kom, for his part, was nominated for the African Interclub player of the Year Award after a brilliant season with Esperance of Tunis. In the Young Player of the Year Category, Steve Mvoue was nominated after helping Cameroon’s U-17 football team with the African Cup of Nations in that category earlier this year. The list will be trimmed to three in each category before voting is opened.
