Recognition: Alioum Sidi ranked best African referee.
Cameroon’s Alioum Sidi has been ranked the best referee in Africa by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, IFFHS. The rankings released recently placed the 38-year-old top of his peers on the continent and 17th in the world. Alioum Sidi is closely followed on the rankings by Gambia’s Bakary Papa Gassama who occupies the 21st position. The rank is no surprise given his brilliant year with the whistle on the continent. Alioum Sidi was Cameroon’s shining light at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations where he handled the opening game of the competition between hosts Egypt and Zimbabwe. He was equally the man in the middle for the final of the competition as Algeria triumphed one nil over Senegal. Alioum Sidi became an international referee in 2008. He refereed in the 2011 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso and World Cup of the same category in Mexico later the same year. Still in 2011, Sidi handled the first leg of the African Champions League finals. Selected journalists and experts from 90 countries around the World took part at the 2019 annual election of the Top Referee, the 33rd time it has been carried out by the IFFHS since 1987. Damir Skomina, the Slovenian Referee (43 years old), won the award with a little margin ahead of 2017 winner, Felix Brych.
