MINAS boss preaches social inclusion at launch of International Day for Persons Living with Disabilities.

The Minister of Social Affairs, Pauline Irene Nguene on Tuesday, 26 November 2019 launched the 28th edition of the International day of persons living with disabilities. This took place at the National Center of Persons Living with Disabilities under the theme; “The Future is Accessible”.
The day paved the way for those living with disabilities to be acknowledged as also contributors to the progress of every society. Over the years, those living with disabilities, despite their potentials, have been excluded from very important aspects in the society, just because many tend to underestimate them and judge them from wrong perceptions.
The result of this is a social exclusion which brings stigma and makes those living with disabilities regret at times. The 28th edition of the International Day for those with disabilities comes with a clarion call for everyone to engage in building an inclusive society wherein these sets of people can live happily while contributing their own quota to the development of their immediate environment.
“We are taking all the measures, taking all the actions to ensure that persons living with disabilities can be part of the society. So there is hope for persons living with disabilities”, said the Minister of Social Affairs who reassured in her speech that no one should be left behind for any reason.
During the opening ceremony, there were games played namely, the wheelchair basketball played by those on wheelchairs and the Goal Ball played by the blind. These sporting activities were boosters that gave hope to those with disabilities while strengthening their determination to succeed.
“We have to eradicate all the obstacles that stand on the path of persons living with disabilities, in terms of education, health and their own contribution in building the society. They should be part and parcel of development”, said Ambe Angelica Bih Mundi, the Director at MINAS in charge of Persons Living with Disabilities and the Old.
She however expressed regret that persons living with disabilities are not sufficiently involved in elections. Mrs Ambe Angelica said the Ministry was doing its best to work with ELECAM so as to ensure these sets of people can register and vote without any challenge. She said it started and there was progress over time.
“We are against the fact that someone is not included in the electoral list because this person has a disability,” the senior MINAS official noted.
Addressing complaints on the working space of persons living with disabilities, she said her ministerial department was ensuring through their hierarchy that the Ministry of Public Works takes into consideration those living with disabilities, when building public structures.
The activities marking this day will run till the 3rd of December 2019 as persons living with disabilities followed the opening ceremony with activities like social sanitary works and other activities which they have been engaging in.
