PM instructs government to check electricity consumption.
Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute has instructed government to check electricity consumption.
This instruction was communicated on Tuesday November 25, 2019 during the launching of a programme to monitor and optimize electricity consumption in the public sector.
According to the monitoring and optimization scheme, the nation will save over FCFA two billion from the FCFA 41 billion spent on electricity consumption yearly. This measure follows instructions from the Prime Minister Head of Government. Joseph Dion Ngute to rigorously cut down the amount paid for electricity bills. Speaking at the launching in Yaounde, Goure Henri Seye Bi, Director General of Exergie Africa, the company entrusted the task to pilot the effort, said a huge share of the expenditure is incurred in public lighting and medium voltage subscribers, which include the entire productive sector of the state. Public lighting alone, he stated, accounts for more than 55% of public electricity expenditure.
“The rates we have now, compared to other countries is extremely high. At this level, it is necessary to identify the meters, the points of subscription and check the counters to measure the real consumption of public lighting. The second part is the medium voltage subscriptions where the actions are extremely technical”, stated Goure Henri Seye Bi.
During the presentation, the experts revealed that as at now, the state has subscribed to a total of 40MW, meanwhile the real need is just above 11MW. The Director regretted that “there are above 71% of useless subscriptions which cost the state some billions”.
The launching ceremony was chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy, Adolphe Ndjouke Thome, during which he said, the implementation of the scheme has been made palpable, thanks to an agreement the nation has concluded with the International Organisation of the Francophonie. The launching crowned a four-day workshop to educate stakeholders on the steps needed to scale down electricity consumption.
A representative of the Francophonie, Kanel Engandja-Ngoulou, who doubles as specialist in cooperation and development program, sounded optimistic about the project. She said “when the State of Cameroon responded positively to the interest we expressed, it was natural that the organisation deployed personnel, alongside officials from the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy to assess the national potential, but also to identify cases that could lead to saving for the government”.
The scheme is part of the larger strategy the nation has developed to effectively manage its energy resources. “Energy is an expensive commodity. We want to reduce the level of energy consumption in administrative buildings to the amount needed so we can pay the right price,“ said Valerie Nkue, Director of Renewable Energy and Energy Management at the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy.
