The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has called on Cameroonians to keep the spirit of openness, dialogue and national concord as the best way to solving the socio-political crisis in the North West and South West Regions. He stated that arms cannot solve the problem of this nature.
Moussa Faki Mahamat spoke at the Yaounde Hilton Hotel on November 27, 2019 night in response to the toast of Cameroon’s Prime Minister, Head of Government, Chief Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute. The Prime Minister offered a dinner of behalf of the Head of State, President Paul Biya in honour of the visiting Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland and the Secretary General of the International Organization of la Francophonie, Louise Mushikiwabo. He said the joint tripartite mission of the three organizations was the first of its kind and explained that it was because Cameroon is a member of the three organizations. Cameroon, he said, was facing a particular socio-political problem and it was incumbent on them to support achieve social and political appeasement.
The leaders of the three organizations had discussions with President Paul Biya and Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute who gave them a complete State of affairs of the situation on the ground especially after the holding of the Major National Dialogue. They also had consultations with political parties, religious bodies, civil society and youth leaders who presented their own facts. Moussa Faki said they noticed a general yearning for peace and stability.
Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute in his toast during the dinner disclosed that President Paul Biya favourably welcomed the proposal of the Secretary General of the International Organization of la Francophonie to mobilize the African Union and the Commonwealth to accompany Cameroon in the appeasement of the socio-political tension.
Coming to the current situation in Cameroon, he said for the past three years, government has been trying to manage the unrests in the North West, South West and Far North Regions. Prime Minister Dion Ngute cited measures in place to solve the crisis, one of which was the Major National Dialogue. Appreciating the tripartite mission, he said, “In these times when Cameroon is faced with challenges stemming from terrorism and violent extremism mostly propagated through information and communication technologies, especially the irresponsible use of social media networks, it is heartwarming to receive support from the special friendship Cameroon enjoys with the Commonwealth, la Francophonie and the African Union.”
