Nachtigal Hydro Power Plant: French delegation Says Work On Good Footing.
The high-level delegation of Electricite de France, EDF, the company charged with the construction of the Nachtigal Hydro Power Plant on November 26 2019, paid an evaluation visit to the project site at Batschenga, Lekie Division of the Centre Region. The visiting Managing Director Jean Bernard Levy was accompanied by French Ambassador to Cameroon, Christophe Guilhou, and Cameroon’s Minister of Water Resources and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba. While on site, the visiting Managing Director said work progress is at a good pace. In his words: “we are one year down the road in the implementation of the project. We are really on time and within our technical performance. So we are happy with the performance of the project so far.” The French company is upbeat to deliver project before the October 2023 deadline as they say the work will progress without any delays. So far, the project sites have been cleared and heavy machines are busy doing excavation works. The next phase, according to the project officials, is the installation of turbines at the nearby river Sanaga. Explaining the context of the project, the Director General of EDF, Augusto Suarez, stated: “We are about to start the work in the Sanaga river, that is, building the dam proper. Many companies have been working on the different phases of the project. The first one was the clearing of the land and other works are ongoing. We will deliver in 2023.”
The Director General added that the capacity of the dam, upon completion, will be about 420MW, the biggest in the country. The project is industrial in nature though sustainable as measures have been taken to preserve the ecosystem around the site. The dam is estimated to be 1500meters long and 50meters high. Cameroon’s highest dependency rate on thermal energy causes the state to lose over FCFA One billion a week in fuel and other expenses, remarked Water Resources and Energy Minister, Gaston Eloundou Essomba. When completed the additional 420MW that would have been added to the electricity grid will scale down expenditure on alternative energy sources.
