Rural Electrification Scheme: EU donates fcfa 10 billion to boost effort.
It was on the heels of working session to review European Union funded projects in Cameroon that the paper work was concluded. Thus, FCFA 10 billion has been disbursed as grant, increase access to electricity in the country. Cameroon’s minister of the Economy, Planning and regional Development, Alamine Ousmane Mey, signed for Cameroon, while Hans-Peter Schadek, Ambassador and head of the EU delegation to Cameroon, signed on behalf of the European Union. The funds will be used to install more electricity infrastructure in the Far North, North, Adamawa, East, South west and North West regions.
Details of the project will feature the electrification of some 600 local communities in the six regions. Four hundred and eight kilometers of one-phase connections will also be updated to a three phase model, in order to respond to the growing need of electricity supply in local communities. The project that will cost over FCFA 122 billion will also get funding from the World Bank and the platform for investment in Africa. The objective of the project is to step up supply in order to match the growing electricity demand. Ambassador Schadek emphasized that the funds are designated. He said it will be used for the partial installation of electricity in communities. It is a grant that comes through, thanks to the European Development bank.’ Other projects funded by the European Union in Cameroon came under review. Among them are the 2017-2021 support project, the public investment Budget and the 2020 action plan.
Commenting on the deal. Minister Alamine Ousmane Mey said this would boost the nation’s effort to revamp the economy.
