Association advocates blood donation.

Association advocates blood donation.

The Cameroon Federation for the Benevolent Donation of Blood, JFE-CADOBES, is stepping up its advocacy for the donation of blood by organizing the 5th edition of the free blood donation to take place from December 17 to 19.

In prelude to the event, the president of the association, Noel Simo, granted a press conference on November 28 at the Noubou Hotel in Douala to edify the public on the raison d’etre of the event. Noel Simo disclosed that the demand for blood stands at 400,000litres whereas only 70,000litres are collected from donors each year, hence the need to step up the blood donation or collection. He disclosed that there were 19000 blood donors in Cameroon comprising 100 volunteers. He urged people to shun prejudices and donate blood as anyone can be victim of an accident or illness that will need blood transfusion.

Debunking the notion that blood is expensive in hospitals, the representatives of the Littoral Regional Delegate for Public Health, Dr. Mbengue Moukouri Raymond, said blood transfusion is free and that the money requested from patients is to conduct medical tests on the blood to make sure it is of good quality before transfusing it to the patient. He called on people to leave from family donors to regular benevolent blood donors.

In its 13 years of existence, JFE-CADOBES has contributed to mapping out the blood collection centres, helped organize the first blood donors’ conference, and lobbied for the American government to offer blood collection and testing equipment to some hospitals in Cameroon. The association has also established a partnership with the Ministry of Defence in view of setting up blood banks. As concerns the blood donation days, Noel Simo said it was organized at the end of the year to match with the end-of-year festivities during which there are many accidents and acute demand for blood in hospitals.

The motto of the association is “Secured blood for everyone; no blood no life”.
