Extraordinary Session of Parliament: Content of special status for NW &SW revealed! House of Chiefs restored with power of “impeachment”.
Although the Extraordinary Session of Parliament which begins today will have as main point on its agenda discussions on fast tracking decentralisation, it has now emerged that the long-clamoured special status for Anglophones will take centre stage with the major innovation being the re-institution of the House of Chiefs as a consultative body.
The Horizon has been reliably hinted by those privy to the content of the Special Status that the House of Chiefs which will be specific to the North West and South west regions will have the power of impeachment! The Regional Assemblies and Councils in these two regions may be taken to task by the House of Chiefs for poor execution of projects in the two regions.
Concerning financial resources, the two regions will get a little more money from the decentralisation fund for their development.
The education sub-system of the Anglophone regions as well as their judicial system will also be protected in the special status.
The bill to fast track decentralisation, The Horizon further learnt, will provide for the scrapping of the post of government delegate. In a city like Yaounde, we were told, the seven mayors will sit down to elect a central mayor who will replace the government delegate.
The bill will also see the re-institution of the commission of enquiry and the public independent mediator.
