Cameroon, EU resolve to strengthen cooperation tie.

The European Union, EU, and the government of Cameroon have discussed ways of bolstering existing partnership ties between the parties. This was the main resolution arrived at during the second ordinary session of the Structured Political Dialogue between the EU and Cameroon, which took place at the Ministry of External Relations Friday. Co-chaired by the Ministry of External Relations, Lejeune Mbella Mbella, and the Ambassador and head of the EU Delegation to Cameroon, Hans- Peter Shadeck, the in-camera meeting had three key items on its agenda. During the meeting that lasted more than four hours, participants exchanged views on Regional issues such as the security situation within the Lake Chad Basin area; political issues, namely the way out of the ongoing socio-political crisis in the North West and South West Regions, and the upcoming Legislative and Council elections; as well as issues of economic cooperation and trade.

In the course of the discussions which Minister Mbella Mbella described as “Frank”, both parties, in their respective capacities, provided information, clarifications and details on the issues that were on the table for examination.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, both the External Relations Minister and the EU Ambassador to Cameroon said their discussions were frank and far-reaching, “The EU is a longstanding and very important partner for us. Today’s meeting afforded us the opportunity to exchange on three key topics. The EU has promised its unrelenting support to Cameroon in handling both Regional and domestic issues…,” said Mbella Mbella.

His Excellency Hans-Peter Shadeck, for his part, said: “We discussed a wide range of issues. The EU gave its opinion on how some of the issues at stake can be handled. We have taken note of the Major National Dialogue convened by the Head of State and the ongoing efforts by government to implement its resolutions”, the senior diplomat said.

He assured that the EU looks forward to working with and supporting Cameroon in all areas of their existing partnerships.

Instituted by Article 8 of the Cotonou Agreement of June 23, 2000 between the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific group of states and the European Union, the Structured Political Dialogue is a formal forum between partners for discussions and sharing of views with the aim of improving and strengthening cooperation ties. Friday’s political dialogue was attended by a Cameroonian delegation made up of some members of government and Cameroon’s envoy to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union, as well as heads of diplomatic missions of European Union member states resident in Cameroon. The first ordinary session of the dialogue for 2019, it would be recalled, look place on June 22.
