SW chiefs hail bill according “special status” to NW, SW
The chiefs of the South West Region have described as timely, the Bill to institute the General Code of Regional and Local Authorities in the country. This follows an enlarged extraordinary executive meeting of the South West Chiefs’ Conference, SWEEC, which took place in Yaounde Sunday December 15, 2019.
With the help of a constitutional expert, the chiefs read the 142-page document between the lines, to ascertain if truly, it met the aspirations of the population of the North West and South West Regions. “The South West Chiefs, after examining the draft bill, hereby convey their heartfelt commendation to President Paul Biya for initiating this draft Bill which is a veritable milestone aimed at deepening and accelerating the implementation of thorough devolution of powers within the ongoing decentralization process in Cameroon. Unique in its style, we strongly hail this draft Bill which provides for a special status for the North West and South West Regions, and will go a long way to address the worries of South West chiefs by instituting the House of Chiefs,” part of the final communiqué that sanctioned the meeting reads.
“We however express the wish that parliament gives full attention towards proper scrutiny of this Bill, so that it meets the aspirations of the population of Cameroon, especially those of the North West and South West Regions,” the chiefs stressed in their final statement.
The enlarged executive conference, which brought together 25 prominent chiefs from the South West Region, was chaired by the President of the South West Chiefs’ Conference, His Royal Majesty Chief Mafany Njie Martin, under the watchful eyes of the Paramount ruler of the Bafaws, Nfon Victor Mukete. Their fervent wish is to see parliament redress some loopholes which they pinpointed in the Bill, most of which, they say, were as a result of poor translation of the text.
