Communicatin Council calls media practitioners to order.
Below is a press release from the President of the National Communication Council.
“The President of the National Communication Council informs media professionals and national public opinion that lately he has observed the worrying recurrence with which some Cameroonian media have been indulging in unprofessional practices that impinge on the ethics of mass communication.
These include:
- The dissemination of information and biased commentary about figures sourced from abroad on the casualties of the sociopolitical crisis in the North West and South West Region;
- Repeated grave and unfounded accusations, insinuating that public authorities are inclined to fomenting a genocide;
- Magnifying appeals to the highest levels of the Government of Cameroon by foreign public figures.
These practices, which cause fissures on national cohesion, are in no way the requisites of professional media institutions as they execute their indispensable social reliance role.
The President of the National Communication Council calls the attention of media professionals to the need to respect provisions of the rules in force, particularly Article 4 of the January 23, 2012 decree reorganizing the NCC which stipulates that “the Council ensures that peace is upheld in all media”, and Article 7, paragraph 1 of the September 24, 1992 decree rendering the journalism code of ethics enforceable which states that, “it is forbidden for a journalist to publish any information sourced from abroad which jeopardizes national interest”.
From the foregoing, the President of the National Communication Council enjoins media professionals to respect the ethical prerequisites that frame the gathering of information meant for the general public and to be more responsible in the execution of their duties”.
