Reactions from some SW Chiefs: “The head of state listens to the people” - Chief Mafany Njie Martin, President of the South West Chiefs’ Conference.
“What actually prompted our meeting is the Bill that has been submitted to the National Assembly which contains the much-talked-about special status of the North West and South West Regions. We were so happy when the news came that the Head of State finally granted a special status to these two Regions. We deeply appreciate because it is what we, the traditional rulers of the South West Region, have been waiting for. Looking at the document, we discover that the Head of state listens to the people. A lot of articles on that code caused us to assemble and send a word of thanks to him. We have in this Bill the institution of the House of Chiefs which existed in our days of Southern Cameroons. It is going to be a forum where the chiefs can meet and deliberate on their local issues. We perused the document with a constitutional expert, who explained the Bill in detail to us, and we have observed some few points which we would table to Parliament for redress. That notwithstanding, it is a document which is welcome”.
