NW farmers exhibit locally processed foods.

After years of growth and positive outlook, nowadays Cameroonian entrepreneurs are only struggling in their daily business to brave the difficult situation created by the security concerns in the two English – speaking regions of the country. The challenging situation has created a need for a push to reinvigorate the national economy and inject much needed dynamism.

In order to reach that noble objective, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are central to the recovery of the Cameroon’s economy, will be at the centre of this effort; reason why the support of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Promotion Agency in Bamenda is available to promote agricultural and agri-food from their stage of raw material to their marketing to make a difference.

The Agency has been providing support to farmers in areas that include processing, linking SMEs with financial institutions and training under the Integrated Programme for the Valorisation of Agricultural and Agri-food Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (TRANSFAGRI) as a part of government bid to create jobs, enhance economic growth and stability.

“The workshop shows that the Agency and its partners are joining efforts to support private sector development, particularly SMEs, with the primary objective of creating better conditions for economic growth,” Simon Emile Mooh, SDO of Mezam, told a workshop for the sensitization, mobilization of stakeholders of Agricultural and Agri-food in Mezam at the Bamenda Upstation on December 4, 2019. The event took place side by side a mini exhibition of some locally processed foods by farmers’ groups. Anthony Ngwa Akonwi, Regional Chief of Center of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Promotion Agency of the North West, emphasized their full commitment to provide non-financial services in six production areas through capacity building for agricultural and agri-food SMEs and deepen activities that were developed under the SPAASME Project. He said the expected impact is the creation and security of more than 4,830 jobs in agribusiness and agro-food SMEs incubated, formalized and strengthened.

The programme, however, is faced with the challenge of information dissemination to its targets. For this reason, participants, basically SMEs specialized in food processing, existing producers’ organisations and policy makers, were sensitized on the Agency’s missions, programmes, projects, services and informing others.
