Roman Catholic Christians in Buea last Thursday received their new Apostolic Administrator, Mgr Michael Bibi. Appointed last week by the pope, Mgr Bibi was received at the historic Mungo Bridge by hundreds who later accompanied him into Buea. The joyful crowd left the Mungo bridge, passed through Tiko, Mutengene and made a stop at the St Charles Lwanga Parish, Molyko Buea.
Speaking at the parish, he thanked Bishop Emmanuel Bushu for the work done throughout his tenure as Bishop. “I am very ready to work with you people, I will sacrifice all my energy to make sure Buea Diocese moves ahead”, he said. He echoed the same message at all stops he made.
The apostolic administrator, still flanked by the crowd, later made another stop at the Regina Pacis Cathedral, Soppo Buea. Appointed on December 28, Mgr Michael Bibi who still maintains his position as auxiliary Bishop of Bamenda, takes over in Buea from Bishop Immanuel Bushu, who is on retirement. Mgr Michael Bibi’s appointment by Pope Francis was made public shortly before that of Andrew Nkea who is now archbishop of Bamenda. Like Archbishop Nkea, Mgr Bibi is expected to keep dealing with challenges of the Anglophone crisis, challenges they have both been dealing with before now.
Speaking shortly after his appointment on Saturday 28 December 2019, Mgr Bibi said: “Every appointment is an opportunity for us to thank God for giving us an opportunity to serve in his church”.
Going to Buea as the Apostolic Administrator, he admitted, is an increase in his tasks as he remains Auxiliary Bishop of Bamenda. “It will give me the opportunity to continue to see how I can serve the people of Buea and Bamenda until when the Holy Father will appoint the Bishop of Buea,” he stated.
Explaining that it is a responsibility he is not to carry out alone, Michael Bibi said: “What I pray for is that God should give me good health, he should give me the strength that I need so that either in Bamenda or Buea, wherever my services will be demanded, I should be able to render them faithfully”.
One of Michael Bibi’s greatest challenges is expected to be the Anglophone crisis, a situation many of the clergy have described as a trying period in the life of the church and its Christians.
He will officially come to the diocese on January 2nd and will be received by Christians, priests and other members of the diocese at the Mungo bridge.
