Did Tibor Nagy disavow Kamto?
The US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs,Tibor Nagy, has reaffirmed U.S. commitment to democracy, peaceful elections, and U.S. support for the Swiss initiative in Cameroon.
He made the statement on his twitter account after holding talks with visiting MRC leader, Maurice Kamto, in the US at the weekend.
The tweet was seen by observers as a disavowal of the MRC leader who has boycotted the elections and vowed to continue protests till an acceptable electoral code is put in place and the Anglophone crisis resolved.
“He basically was mocking at Maurice Kamto for stupidly thinking that he can take power through the streets with US backing. America believes in democratic transition. This means the ballot box is the only way to be picked as the president of a country. Mr. Kamto must be disappointed and shocked. He should hold his head in his hand in between his legs for travelling thousands of miles to learn that his party should have gone for the February 9 twin elections,” wrote John Akuma
“Kamto wanted post-electoral violence in Cameroon after the 2018 presidential poll. Aware that incumbent Paul Biya had defeated him, he seized the rostrum to announce that he was the winner. His call for street protests did not work. Neither did his blessings to the gang of misguided Cameroonians in the diaspora succeed, “ Akuma, probably a pro-regime agent, noted.
“ When Kamto discovered that his party which he claimed had a huge following could not field candidates in all the constituencies of the country, he withdrew from the 9 February 2020 elections, not without giving flimsy excuses”, he said.
Akuma thanked Tibor Nagy for reminding Prof. Kamto that 'peaceful elections' is the one and only way the US wants the opposition to take power.
He advised Kamto to fight for the plebiscite of the Cameroonian people and stop seeking power in foreign offices.
Akuma was also of the opinion that what the MRC leader needed most was reconciliation with his militants who are not happy with him for pulling the party out of the elections. “Rather than go abroad, Kamto should work on an in-house reconciliation plan” he concluded.
Since leaving jail at the end of last year, this is the first time Kamto is meeting with Tibor Nagy as the MRC leader is expected to hold a rally in France on February 1.
