20 alleged fighters drop arms in Kumba.
Some 20 youths in Meme Division believed to be ex-fighters of the ongoing crisis in the two English-speaking regions of the country have dropped their weapons in Kumba. The youths, looking very frail and haggard, alighted from an old taxi as they were being received with joy by the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme, Chamberlain Ntou’ o Ndong on January 8, 2020 at his office.
As if that wasn’t enough, the next day Thursday, January 9, 2020, another group of 13 young men made their entry at the SDO’s office where they were again received by the SDO personally.
These 20 ex-fighters were treated to a prayer session after which their health situation was checked by medics from the Kumba District Hospital. They all confirmed they were tired running inside the forest, not knowing actually what they were chasing. Most of them said they had abandoned the fight since last year, but did not have the opportunity to get in touch with the SDO for their immediate release from bondage and misery. They said they were being chased by others who did not want them to quit, so they had to run for their dear lives.
Appreciating the ex-fighters, the Senior Divisional Officer for Meme said he uses a down-to-earth approach to get to these separatist fighters. Like father and servant of the Division, he said his hands are wide open to receive all and not some to restart the construction of a new Meme Division. He opined that there are two kinds of fighters, those whose aim is to reinforce the ideology and others who were simply recruited to fulfill the ideology.
This surrendering of arms is coming barely some few days after one of the most dreaded fighters in Meme, “General Divine”, was alleged to have been killed by his own peers in Mbonge Sub Division.
