 Abuse of power: Ayos DO slaps, detains teacher for flouting her authority.

The social media was awash with news last Wednesday, 24 January,  of the brutalisation and detention of a teacher by the female DO of Ayos, Sandrine Mbey. The DO who made an unexpected visit to GBHS Ayos in the Nyong and Mfoumou Division of the Centre Region to fish out a delinquent kid was barred from doing so by the teacher, Steve Ondoua Samba. He said the DO could not interrupt the exams being written by the students.

Wounded in her pride, the DO reported slapped the teacher and ordered his arrest, provoking a wave of indignation among the teaching corps and Cameroonians as a whole. Pressure from several quarters forced the release of the teacher who is a PhD holder in sociology. 

Reactions of major actors:

The D.O.:

"I received a call from the police superintendent following a death threat complaint about a student of this school (GHS Ayos) who had already been arrested. So I went down to the school since it was becoming recurrent. On arrival, I presented myself and the teacher said 'You can't get in madam!'. So I shoved him with the palm of my hand telling him to step back. He then seized me and threw me on the students of the first bench...The students in this class all had unkempt hair, afro and locks; others wore very slim trousers...The teacher told me he is a PhD student..., he is [category] A2, meaning he is automatically more than me. I ordered his arrest for further investigation and information."

The Principal:

"I heard noises and was told the D.O. is in the classrooms. She didn't stop by my office to inform me she was in my school to do one thing or the other. She didn't."

The teacher:

"On arrival, what the lady (D.O.) sought to know was who I am. I presented myself normally. Then she told me she had a mission, an unexpected investigation that she wanted to carry out in my classroom, and she said she also wanted to talk with the students. I reminded her that I was in an evaluation situation and pleased she passes later, time for me to round off and collect the scripts. She pushed me and asked me to step outside. She did not slap me; she pushed me that I only managed to keep my balance. I questioned her whether she thought it was right to come into a classroom of a Category A2 official and push him in front of his students. She told me she would show me how the power of the signature is more than that of a PLEG."
