Anglophone journalists join the fray; Kejang Henry vows to bring in inventors to develop Douala V.

Over a dozen English-speaking journalists are on the starting blocks for the February 9 Legislative and Municipal elections. The campaigns that started last Saturday, January 25 have not only seen journalists reporting the news but also taking part actively as the main actors.

At least six of these journalists are vying for Council seats in the North West Region, five in the South West Region and one in the Littoral.

Martin Nkematabong, senior journalist and chief of service for regional information at the Cameroon News and Publishing Corporation, SOPECAM, is one of the frontline names on the CPDM list for the Menji Council in Lebialem Division.

Other English-speaking journalists on the CPDM lists in the South West Region are the boss of the Eden Media Group, Zachee Ngandembou, and the Station Manager of Eden Radio, Peter Kum, who are all running for the Limbe I Council. Their list is headed by the Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council, Andrew Motanga Monjimba.

In Buea, the CRTV South West Regional boss, Kange Williams Wasaloko, is on the CPDM list for the Buea Council. He will be up against two colleagues, Andrew Nsoseka and Innocent Mbunwe of The Post Newspaper who will be running under the SDF lists. The duo look to follow in the footsteps of their deceased boss Francis Wache who was Mayor of the Nkor Council, Noni Sub-division.

In the North West Region, CRTV’s Ben-Collins Nyuyberiwo is part of the CPDM list for the Nkum Council, Bui Division.

In the Donga Mantung Division, Ezekiel Dotta, Pubisher of The Watchdog Tribune is on the CPDM list for the Misaje Council. Tata Bernard and Marcel Abanda, both reporters for News-watch are on the CPDM lists for the Ndu and Nkambe Councils, respectively. The lone female Anglophone journalist, Martha Meme of the CRTV, is running for the Ako Council under the CPDM ticket. She is joined on the list by former TV anchor Napoleon Nyieta. In the Littoral Region, Henry Kejang, Canal 2 English news anchor and Deputy National Communication Secretary of the Social Democratic Front will be running on his party’s list for the Douala V Council.

Kejang says the SDF list will bring meaningful development to Douala V which the party is determined more than ever to win back. He says he is poised to bring in inventors who will develop the municipality and make it an enviable community. Kejang Henry Atembeh, a seasoned journalist born in Mamfe in 1973, says his party is out to bring back the lost glory of the Douala V area. “How can you explain the fact that the sub-contractor collecting taxes puts only about CFA 250 million in to the council coffers after collecting over CFA 700-800 million. And we have council staff that go for months without salaries, most of whom don’t have any social insurance scheme”, he decried. To him the SDF list will change the tides and make life better for both the council workers and the people living within the municipality.

Kejang Henry Atembeh understands that his municipality is the biggest in the Littoral region and Cameroon as a whole. As such, he is ready to bring in more investors, develop the poor road network, and improve on the hygienic conditions of the municipality.

Kejang Henry Atembeh said like any other party going in for the municipal elections, they have printed posters, handouts, and other communication gadgets to sell their ideas and their vision to the people.

As journalists go about chasing the news during these campaigns, they will bear in mind that some of their colleagues are the news makers and will be hoping to steal the headlines on February 9.
