Motaze hails the Customs officials for their commitments.

The International Customs day was on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 celebrated in Cameroon under the theme “Customs fostering sustainability for people, prosperity and the planet”.
The event was presided over by the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze at the 101 Air force base in Mvan, Yaounde, and saw the participation of the DG of Customs and other officials from both government and customs department. Also, the event welcomed some members of some international organisations and diplomatic missions who thought it relevant to celebrate the day with the government of Cameroon.
In a speech presented by the Minister of Finance, he lauded those who have given their support to the customs department by empowering field officers to realize their objectives.
To the Minister, the customs day is about emphasizing on how customs respond to socio-economic, health and environmental concerns. “Given the direct links between the customs mission and several SDGs, it is essential that Customs around the world address the environmental, economic, health and social challenges to be met and energize their efforts to provide a strong and efficient response. In this context, the contribution of Customs to sustainability can be broken down through three axes”, said the Minister of Finance. The three axes to the Minister include; serving people by building societies that keep them safe, ensuring prosperity by lowering barriers to trade for just societies based on inclusion and finally combating climate change to ensure better environmental sustainability by supporting the effective implementation of the various multilateral environmental agreements.
To the Director General of Customs, Fongod Edwin Nuvaga, the Cameroon Customs department is at the forefront of fighting for the prosperity of Cameroon. From his speech, he highlighted that the contributions of the customs department is in mobilizing budgetary resources and facilitating trade. “With regard to the budgetary component, customs have mobilized during the previous year, a total provisional revenue of 971.7 billion FCFA including 840billion of budgetary revenue, 96.7 billion of off-budget revenue and 35 billion transit rights on the Chad Cameroon pipeline”, said Fongod Edwin Nuvaga.
The fruits have been promising on the revenue generated by the customs officials. The D.G of Customs said their duty is not only to directly contribute to the state budget, but they also help in collecting taxes on behalf of some public establishments and partners.
The event ended with the decoration of some meritorious customs officers who have been outstanding in their commitments.
