Owners of private press outfits who turned out at last Friday’s New Year’s wishes ceremony to Rene Emmanuel Sadi, minister of communication (MINCOM), left disappointed after he glossed over the crucial issue of aid to private press.
They had expected the MINCOM boss would announce a date for the payment of the 2019 public aid to private communication, but without being specific, Sadi only made a quick mention of efforts he was making towards causing a progressive increase in the package that had been dedicated to the private media in past years.
He announced the impending signature of a decree fixing new conditions and modalities organizing institutional support to the private press.
Some publishers who spoke on condition of anonymity said that omission had dampened their hopes of seeing a call for applications for the 2019 edition of the aid.
The MINCOM boss dwelt on the crucial role his ministry had to play in this weekend’s legislative and municipal elections as well as Cameroon’s hosting of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in April 2020 and the African Cup of Nations (AfCON) in January 2021.
In connection with the two sports events, he announced that CRTV would be equipped with state-of-the-art mobile equipment and the stadiums equipped with commentary booths of international standards. A protocol agreement for the disbursement of 3 billion FCFA by government to this effect had been signed, he said.
Sadi also announced plans to operationalise the new platform of government communication by which credible information is given to project the achievements of government.
He said 2020 will see the start of the pilot phase of the virtual information agency which in the long run would be transformed into a news agency.
Prior to the minister’s address, MINCOM’s Secretary General, Felix Zogo, gave a positive balance sheet for 2019.
The ceremony culminated in the ritual of the communication family shaking hands with the MINCOM boss.
