Gulf of Guinea: UN mobilizing partners for more safet.
The United Nations Organisation (UNO) is ready to continue to work with other international partners to ensure that the Inter-regional Coordination Centre (ICC) for Safety and Security in the Gulf of Guinea carries out its missions successfully.
In this connection, an international conference of donors is being prepared to raise funds to enable the ICC function properly. It is for this reason that a joint mission carried out by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Central Africa, Francois Lounceny Fall, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to West Africa and Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, is in Cameroon to concert with government authorities considering that Cameroon is host to ICC. The joint mission members had discussions with Cameroon’s Minister Delegate at the Ministry of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, inYaounde on February 5, 2020.
After their discussions, Francois Lounceny Fall told the press that the Gulf of Guinea was very important for the UN, He decried that fact that it was witnessing growing insecurity in its waters characterized by illegal trafficking in humans, arms and drugs, as well as being a route to other things that fuel terrorism. He said the Gulf of Guinea was a zone rich in raw materials, natural and fishing resources, stating that it was important for the blue economy. Minister Felix Mbayu, he said, shared Cameroon government’s vision with them and they leave Cameroon with the conviction that the ICC will know better days ahead.
Corroborating him, Mohamed Ibn Chambas said the UN has mandated the UN Offices in West and Central Africa “to see how we can work together to support the States of West and Central Africa in their efforts to tackle certain security challenges.” He said piracy was a serious security threat in the Gulf of Guinea and it was necessary to provide the ICC with facilities to make it more operational.
The two officials lauded Cameroon for hosting the Centre and stated that ICC has already created functional Subdivisions in West and Central Africa.
