MINADER prioritises cocoa, cashew nuts in 2020.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have been urged to put the production of cocoa, cashew nuts and rice at the centre of their action in 2020. The challenge was made by the Agriculture Minister, Gabriel Mbairobe, while officiating the beginning of year annual conference of heads of central and decentralized services of the Ministry.
Deliberations at the two-day meeting unfolded under the theme: “The Revitalization of the Major industries with a view to the Operationalisation of Agricultural Revolution: the case of Cocoa, Cashew and rice.” In concrete terms, every effort will be sought to optimise cocoa production and other non-timber forest products. The Minister however stressed that this has always been their priority, saying things didn’t turn out well. “We started like a third world producer, then descended to the fifth place while all the potentials and assets are there to increase production”, Minister Mbairobe regretted.
To meet their objective of producing 600000 tonnes of cocoa annually, the officials have opted to introduce meaningful soil fertilization.
Talks have opened to step up rice production by opening up to 500,000 hectares of rice farms within the next five years. Another thing in view is to modernize the production of the very resilient cashew nut. The ultimate goal is to hit a 150,000-tonne national production by 2014.
