The Network of Forestry Training Institutions in central Africa, known by its French acronym, RIFFEAC, has been empowered to train sustainable forest users in the Central African zone. This follows the signing of a convention between the Network and the African Development Bank, AfDB.
According to the terms of the convention, the AfDB would disburse FCFA 3.3 Billion as grant to the Network of Forestry Training institutions in Central Africa. The funds will foot the bill of a central African project to support the development of a lifelong training in the forest sector. The 5-year project will primarily benefit four countries, notably Cameroon, Gabon, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Congo Brazzaville. RIFFEAC, it would be recalled, is a group of 23 training institutions from the Central Africa Sub Region. The group exists to develop the skills and structures required for the joint management of environmental and forest resources. This second phase of the project seeks to train 200 trainers and 640 operators from across the four beneficiary countries.
The network plans to have a solid system, whose impact is expected to touch more than 2,500 actors in the forestry sector. “Today we are in a transformation phase. The challenges are multiple; both working on the offer, the quality of the training offered and the development of programmes to best respond to the needs.
All this is done through partnerships. The results will have to translate to a number of people trained, quality programs, identification of needs at company level as this is done to impart high-level skills”, explained Benoit Lebeurre, Director of AFDB in Cameroon.
For their part, RIFFEAC officials expressed optimism. “What was important was that there was a match between training and employment.
Because in the past, we selected students who did not meet the profile that companies expected. So with the funding of FCFA 1.1 billion, we were able to begin the project in 2013”, the central Africa Regional Coordinator of RIFFEAC, Claude Kachaka Sudi Kasiko, stated.
