Educational reforms: Gov’t to recruit 6000 more teachers by end of 2020 thanks to World Bank funding.
By the end of 2020, an additional 6000 teachers would have been recruited in Cameroon, thanks to World Bank funding.
The announcement was made on 6 February by Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa, minister of basic education, at the end of discussions with World Bank Director of Operations for Cameroon, Abdoulaye Seck.
It emerged from the talks that the Group will disburse an additional 100,000,000 US dollars (around FCFA 59.6 billion) to help the government of Cameroon in its educational reforms in the basic education sector (PAREC).
Speaking to the press, Abdoulaye Seck said he headed a delegation to the Ministry of Basic Education to respond to the government’s request for additional funding for the support project for the reform of education in Cameroon. He explained that the additional finance of 100,000,000 US dollars brings the World Bank’s total support to 228,000,000 US dollars (in terms of grants and debts) in assisting the government of Cameroon.
Abdoulaye Seck said during discussions they talked about the challenges in the educational project which is in terms of equity especially in rural areas as far as access to quality education is concerned. But these challenges, the World Bank Director of Operation said, are a way for them to do more.
“We are encouraged and pleased with the way projects are unfolding and the passion the Minister of Basic Education has shown in ensuring that these projects are successful”, Abdoulaye Seck underscored. He said they are looking to support the new phase of the PAREC project which is on the way and the World Bank is very committed in supporting young Cameroonians in obtaining the best basic education.
Laurent Serge Etoundi Ngoa explained that in the additional finance from the World Bank, 50 million US Dollars is an offer to the government within the World Bank partnership for education programme. Minister Etoundi Ngoa said the money will facilitate the recruitment of 3,000 teachers which started last year.
The process will continue with the recruitment of 3,000 more in the course of this year making a total of 6,000 before the end of the academic year 2019-2020.
The development objective of the Education Reform Support Project for Cameroon is out to improve equitable access to quality basic education, with a focus on selected disadvantaged areas. The project comprises three components; improving access, quality and education system management supports with priority areas such as enhancing equitable access to quality pre-primary and primary education; strengthening education system management; and supporting the education needs of public schools in host communities with refugees.
