National Youth Day: "....I am Convinced if they get on Board we can emerge before 2035.."- NW Governor.

The once buoyant and booming Bamenda whose population could at all moments respond to patriotic calls is now referred as enemy territory respecting the dictates of the separatists. The lockdown that was imposed by amba fighters ahead of Youth Day celerations, reduced the march past to a 30-minute affair at the Bamenda Commercial Avenue grandstand. It saw a scanty turn out as most youths stayed indoors probably in response to calls for the observation of a ghost or dead town instigated by armed independence fighters.

Addressing the few who turned out at the Commercial Avenue grandstand, Adolphe Lele Lafrique ,North West regional governor assured: "With the new decentralization speed to which the NW has hitherto been at the forefront, youths must sit up and join the head of state in his maiden 10 February call for a total development".

He further added: "Through the special status I appeal to all the youths to take the lead in its application for a more progressive region. We have been witnesses to the so many skills filled youths who have received awards today. Therefore this sounds a patriotic call to others. This I am convinced if they get on board we can emerge before 2035".

The march past which saw no lay private institution and a few government- owned institutions as though hand-picked is yet to receive public appreciation.

Under the theme "peace, decentralization participation of youth towards local development ", some youths who received awards told The Horizon Newspaper they witnessed diverse challenges amongst which are financial constraints owing to the so many youths who come knocking for knowledge. The young entrepreneurs further intimated: "I train and let the youths go their way which contrarily I would have been thinking of financing and establishing them. My wish is since I have been recognized I hope I can be financed so that generally others who knock on the doors of my expertise will benefit too".

To Mukete "it’s indeed a surprise as my efforts in the agricultural field have been recognized to meet up with the 300 sustainable youths inclusion. Over the years I have had the privilege to train youths who are independent and being recognized today is a mark of encouragement".

Despite the optimism, it should be noted, miles from the feast ground gunshots could be heard in hotspots of the region.
