No new ground was broken yesterday during elections into the majority of councils controlled by the ruling CPDM at the 9 February 2020 twin polls. The CPDM won 316 councils, while UNDP , PCRN, CDU, SDF , MDR, FCNS, MPCN, UMS and MCNC are credited with 16, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3,3,2,2,1 in that order.
Most of the old guard were returned to the helm of the councils, following instructions from the Central Committee. Such was the case for most of the councils in the South West, West and Centre regions.
In Limbe, for example, all three mayors of the last mandate were voted back into office.
The fireworks expected in Buea, given the caliber of councilors it boasts did not happen. Namanga Ngongi, former undersecretary at the FAO who was expected to lock horns with Barrister David Mafani Namange was prevailed upon to abandon his ambitions at a closed-door meeting chaired by Fako SDO, Engamba Emmanuel Ledoux ,in the presence of some CPDM bigwigs from Fako (See story elsewhere).
In the North West, some competition was allowed to happen. That is why Musa Shey Nfor of CamCCUL fame campaigned to go to the helm of the coveted Nkambe Council. He takes over from Ngabir Paul Bantar who remains a councillor.
The Ndu Council which the SDF lost to the CPDM for the first time will be run by Abdoul Kanfon Borno, Secretary for Islamic Education in the North West. He is CPDM section president for the area.
At the Tubah Council which the CPDM also won from the SDF, the ruling party found consensus around the candidature of Tanjong Martin who crossed carpet from the SDF where he was not appreciated. He has the chance to complete his development agenda for the council which hosts the University of Bamenda.
