Makossa singer Ntoumba Minka passes away.
Popular makossa singer, Ntoumba Minka, passed away in a hospital in France on Monday, February 17 after a brief illness.
Born in 1961, Ntoumba Minka’s death was received with shock and surprise given that he was preparing to take part in a concert alongside Chantal Ayissi on March 7 in Paris in line with the International Women’s day.
“This is a great loss to our family. He was like a father not only to me but to all of us because he was always there for the family. We will miss him so dearly,” his nephew Joseph Minka said.
He leaves behind a musical career that first saw him cut his teeth with the national orchestra in the early ‘80s. He would later move to the Ivory Coast in 1987 where he spent three years working with renowned artists like Meiway and later Awilo Longomba. Ntoumba Minka would later move to Paris on September 10, 1990 where he worked with the late Guy Lobe and Ernest Mvouama.
He finally burst to the Cameroon musical scene in 2005 with his hit song ‘L’homme est mauvais’ which decries the ungrateful nature of human beings. He followed that up with popular albums ‘Sexy Makero or ‘Abogas’.
The artist never hid this admiration for Richard Bona and Etienne Mbappe while he also upheld Dikoto Mandengue and Alaji Toure as his models. But Ntoumba Minka adopted a musical style which saw him blend merengue with makossa as well as the Ivorian genre.
