Human Rights Commission commends Feb 9 twin polls stakeholders.

The Chairman on the National Commission of Human Rights and Freedom; (NCHRF), Dr Divine Chemuta Banda, has said the February 09 Council and Municipal elections in Cameroon unfolded in calm and serene atmosphere in spite of security challenges in the North West and South West regions and a few incidents recorded in some parts of the country.

He made the statement in Yaounde on Monday, February 17 2020 during a post-electoral press conference. “Elections Cameroon will be commended for their efforts to facilitate each voter’s access to his or her polling station through the innovation of informing voters by SMS of their polling centers before the vote. Election materials were available,” he said.

Dr Banda added that people exercised their right to vote in complete freedom and the forces of law and order were present in polling centres to ensure security even if their presence was less noticeable further away from urban centres.

 The Rights Commission chairman also appreciated the inclusion of disability during the polls, especially the provision of Braille ballots. Notwithstanding, the Chairman of the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms noted some shortcomings during the polls, notably, the presence of staircases in some polling stations that rendered access for persons with disabilities difficult. He also pointed out some lamps made available at local polling centres were of low intensity.

Dr Banda intimated that the job of the members of the commission was compromised by the fact that, the Commission requested the Ministry of Territorial Administration to accredit 267 of its members to observe the polls, but only 88 were accredited. This, he said, made the Commission to work in collaboration with the UN Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa.

Commenting on the turnout of the voters during the elections, the Chairman attributed the low participation rate to three factors - the general security environment which prevailed before and during the elections in the North West and South West Regions characterized by disturbance and threats by separatists, external threats elsewhere, especially in Far North and East Regions, and voter apathy resulting from the post 2018 election protests.
