Brazilian ambassador denies country’s alleged recognition of Ambazonia.
Jubilation by Cameroonian Anglophone separatists that the Brazilian government had backed their cause for the restoration of independence has been shortlived.
Drawing from the fact that the municipal council of the Brazilian town of Barueri found in the state of Sao Paulo had on 2 December 2019 passed a motion recognizing Ambazonia, separatists went celebrating a diplomatic victory.
But Vivian Loss Sanmartin, Brazil’s ambassador to Cameroon, clarified the position of her government in an interview to CRTV on 21 February 2020. She said the act performed by the municipal council of that small town did not have any legal bearing because only the President of the Republic had such power.
« …A legislative motion of a municipal chamber in Brazil has no legal value. Our constitution is very clear. It is a prerogative of the President of the Republic supported of course by his minister of foreign affairs”.
To emphasise the strong ties between Brazil and Cameroon, Sanmartin said her country is the only Latin American country with an embassy in Yaounde and Cameroon has supported the candidacies of many Brazilians at the helm of international organizations. What is more, Brazil was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Cameroon.
