Traffic and business ground to a halt in Douala yesterday as thousands of supporters of the MRC turned out en masse to welcome Maurice Kamto who returned to Cameroon after a one-month visit abroad that took him to France, United States and Canada.
The streets leading to the Grand Moulin Headquarters of the MRC were virtually paralysed as the motorcade carrying him moved to the meeting venue. They could be heard chanting “President, liberate us” as they covered the journey to the party headquarters.
Surprisingly, the forces of law and order, known to block any such movements, citing breach of the peace, kept their calm.
Addressing the militants at the party headquarters, Kamto thanked them for their support. He said his visit abroad was another phase in the liberation struggle. Kamto expressed regret that a day of national mourning had not been declared in memory of the Ngarbuh tragedy that left over 20 people, mostly children dead.
After calling on his supporters to express their solidarity with the families of the victims, he seized the opportunity to observe a minute of silence in memory of the departed souls.
According to the MRC leader, a two to three years emergency plan must be put in place for the reconstruction of the two English speaking regions destroyed in the course of the Anglophone crisis.
He ended by reiterating his intentions of bringing the country together so as to transform the fate of Cameroonians and work towards the full development of the youths who are gradually losing their values in Cameroon.
Maurice Kamto left Cameroon at the end of the month of January to meet his supporters abroad and reportedly thank them for standing by him all through his detention period that is, from January to October 2019.
He returned home after holding two main rallies on February 1, 2020 in Paris, France and the other one on February 9 in Washington DC.
Initially scheduled to return yesterday in Douala, the MRC leader unexpectedly returned on Tuesday night. This change of strategy probably took the forces of law and order off guard, enabling Kamto to ‘dribble’ the administration and pull a crowd yesterday in Douala.
