At Commonwealth Day: Mbayu denies government opting for military solution to Anglophone crisis.

The Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, has denied that the government of Cameroon has opted for a military solution to the resolution of the Anglophone crisis, citing the Major National Dialogue as evidence of its good faith to use dialogue.

He made the statement last Monday during a ceremony organized to celebrate the 2020 edition of the Commonwealth Day at the Ministry of External Relations.

Celebrated under the theme, “A Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming,” the event brought together several members of government, Members of Parliament, the Commonwealth diplomatic family and other personalities.

While celebrating Cameroon’s membership in the Commonwealth since 1995, Minister Mbayu said the organisation commits member countries to the development of free and democratic societies, the promotion of peace, prosperity and improving the lives of people of the Commonwealth. It is within this context, the Minister said, the President of the Republic convened the Major National Dialogue which laid the foundation for delivering a common future for Cameroonians through connection, innovation and transformation with its recommendations providing a blueprint for building the common future aspired by all.

Terror, violence and collateral damages, the Minister said, can be avoided with personal and collective commitment. “Planting explosives to kill is not the way to build a common future. The Head of State attaches great importance to solving problems through dialogue. Accordingly, after the Major National Dialogue, a General Code for Regional and Local Authorities, and a law on bilingualism have been promulgated into law. To those who say the Cameroon government is opting for a military solution, I say show some good faith,” Minister Mbayu stated.

Speaking on behalf of the Commonwealth diplomatic corps, the Canadian High Commissioner to Cameroon, Richard Bale, said the Commonwealth is a valued-base association of 54 States working at the promotion of democracy, human rights, gender equality, the rule of law and sustainable development. He appreciated the increasing cooperation between Cameroon and the Commonwealth and the association’s commitment towards peace building in Cameroon.

The Queen’s message was read and prizes of excellence awarded to students and entrepreneurs during the event.
