National Assembly: Female MPs at helm of Provisional Bureau What future for ailing Cavaye?

The March session of the National Assembly opened in Yaounde on Tuesday, 10 March 2020 with three women at the helm of the Provisional Bureau.

The eldest Member of Parliament, Hon Koa Mfegue Laurentine, chaired the sesion. She was assisted by the two youngest Members of Parliament who were also females.

The session opened with 91parliamentarians-elect who were having their first experiences to sit in the house as the people's representatives. The absence of the outgoing House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, could not go unnoticed. Reports say he is still undergoing treatment abroad for an ailment.

His absence immediately triggered speculations about his possible replacement, but his supporters say he would be obviously back before elections to regain his post of Speaker.

Presiding over the Statutory Session, the eldest Member welcomed all the House Members who were present at the start of the 10th Legislative Session.

"The agenda of this Statutory Ordinary Session revolves around two main items; the validation of the mandates of the Members-elect of the National Assembly and the Composition of the National Assembly Bureau", said Hon Koa in her speech.

Hon Koa also told the members of parliament to maintain people's interest as a priority in the house.

The new Members of the House, excited to be given the confidence by the people, reacted to the speech of the eldest member.

"The Eldest Member said in the next five years, the common interest of Cameroonians will be the main interest. It is not new. We have been elected here by the people and we are here to defend the needs of the people. She is the eldest Member from CPDM and I think that what she has said has been validated by her president, Mr. Paul Biya. So I will be there to verify each time that she is not a liar. I am expecting that every time the common interest of the people will be on the table," Hon Cabral Libii said.

For her part, Hon Hourane Moluh, a new House Member, said she remained an observer in the meantime."We have a lot to do. We have to verify and ensure all members are set. For now I don't have a lot to say, I am in the observing process," she said.

Meanwhile, Hon Ngalla Gerard was rather concerned about the case in the war-torn English speaking regions as well as the recent attack on Galim.

"It is a great feeling to be here for the first time and I think it is also with mixed emotions. I am worried about the violence from the North West and that from Galim.

A normal expectation from me should have been how to promote and advance democracy in the country by voting laws that will affect the population positively and making sure that we fight for development. But we cannot do this under the conditions we have in the North West and South West", Hon Ngalla Gerard said.
