GICAM President hails Motaze!
Celestin Tawamba, President of the Cameroon businessmen’s syndicate, GICAM, was in the news late last year when he denounced Cameroon’s taxation system as choking entrepreneurs and went further to write President Paul Biya on the matter. This gave the impression that he saw everything wrong in the reforms carried out by the minister of finance, Louis Paul Motaze. That is water under the bridge now. The two are ready now to work hand in hand to ensure that Cameroon’s economy does not sink any further, especially in the advent of the coronavirus pandemic.
Tawamba led a strong delegation of GICAM to Minister Motaze last Thursday in Yaounde within the framework of permanent dialogue and concertation over economic issues.
Speaking to the press, Tawamba unexpectedly hailed Motaze for some of the measures taken to improve on the business climate. He particularly gave credit to the MINFI boss for disbursing 100 billion to clear part of the internal debt, a move which gave some enterprises a new lease of life.
He said during the talks GICAM encouraged the minister to go further and give a “lifting” to our taxation system.
“Let us together review our taxation system so as to facilitate growth”, he said.
Tawamba said the new challenge now was the corona virus which virtually changes the structure of our macro-economic indicators.
He said it was necessary to work in unison to prevent the Cameroonian economy from crumbling under the weight of the pandemic.
On what security measures suggested, he said there were no immediate concrete measures but there was need to define a concertation framework and concretise it.
On the country’s programme with the IMF, Tawamba said it was time to make a paradigm shift from the short-term programmes and come out with a long-term vision for Cameroon’s economy.
It should be recalled that late last year, the press was awash with reports about Tawamba’s conflict with the MINFI boss. He had decried the system of taxation on turnover which he said choked businesses in Cameroon and asked for audience with President Paul Biya to make the point since concertations with successive ministers of finance had not resolved the problem.
