Paul Biya, US Ambassador discuss Anglophone crisis again!
The crisis in the North West and South West Regions was once again at the centre of discussions between the Head of State Paul Biya and the US Ambassador to Cameroon Peter Henry Balerin.
Both men had not discussed the topic, (at least one on one in a public audience) since May 2018 during Ambassador Balerin’s famous ‘legacy’ advice to Paul Biya.
When both men met at the Unity Palace on Wednesday, March 11 the situation in the North West and South West Regions was still on the table though both men did not give out much- Ambassador Balerin this time keeping his tongue in his mouth.
“The US Ambassador to Cameroon HE Peter Henry Balerin and I discussed today at the Unity Palae on subjects of common interest notably health and the situation in the North West and South West Regions,” Paul Biya wrote on his official Facebook Page after the audience.
In another statement attributed to President Biya, discussion of health issues is highlighted as the only subject.
“Audience with U.S. Ambassador Peter Henry Barlerin to assess the fight against the Coronavirus disease (#COVID-19) and HIV/AIDS, ” said President Biya after the meeting.
For its part, reporting on the meeting, Cameroon Tribune said President Paul Biya granted an audience to the United States Ambassador Henry Balerin, at the State House, with the US envoy showering encomiums on the Head of State for his strides in steering Cameroon towards attaining the 2035 emergence vision.
The paper said “During the top-level meeting, the two personalities also made a panoramic review of the various areas of cooperation that underline diplomatic links between the two nations.”
Paraphasing the US diplomat’s comments to the press, Cameroon Insider cited him as saying he and his host exchanged on a wide range of issues including the sociopolitical situation in the North West and South west regions.
According to the state print media organ, Ambassador Balerin said he also assured government of the United State’s support in accompanying the Cameroonian government in its development drive and restated Washington DC’s willingness and availability in helping to find definitive solutions to the ongoing crisis in the two English – speaking regions.
“On another note, the two also discussed government’s efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS and the ground covered so far in a bid to curb the spread of the disease”, Cameroon Insider reported.
The United Stated, it would be recalled, announced early this year that it was tripling its support to Cameroon with regard to the fight against the pandemic.
The US Embassy, in a statement on January 14, congratulated Cameroon on its efforts toward the cause and said it would make available about FCFA 57 billion this year.
This audience comes in the wake of a (verbal) stand-off between human rights organisations, international NGOs and the government of Cameroon over human rights violations in the North West and South West Regions.
