Has Cavaye been quarantined? His absence at opening of Parliament sparks speculation of worsening health.
The public outcry provoked by the entry of re-elected House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, into the Glass House last Monday without quarantine, just two days after returning from treatment in France, may have caused a change of heart.
The third most powerful individual was absent last Friday at the official opening of the National Assembly, just three years after his re-election. It was seen as a welcome relief to critics who saw his action of not submitting to self-isolation as outrageous because it was tantamount to putting his colleagues at risk of infection of COVID-19 were he to be tested positive eventually.
The social media was awash with reports at the weekend that he had accepted to be placed on quarantine. Members of his entourage were also said to have undergone the same process.
That is why it was Koa Mengue Laurentine, the eldest Member of Parliament who chaired the opening of Parliament last Friday.
In her speech, she explained that it was just in respect of the standing orders of the National Assembly that the eldest member be the officiating personality. She invited her colleagues to show more responsibility in the accomplishment of their missions, to be disciplined and not to indulge in truancy. Their immunity, she said, was not licence for lawlessness.
Unfortunately, government has made no statement to say why Cavaye was absent at last Friday’s opening, sparking speculations that he might not be too well.
Observers were quick to point out that in the interest of Cameroonians, Parliament be closed and all MPs be quarantined too. That would show leading by example and a show of political will, they argued.
