Businesses sealed for skyrocketing prices.

At least two warehouses were sealed in Yaounde last Monday for not respecting laid down prices.

The wholesalers, mainly dealers in cereals, had their warehouses sealed for defying calls to scrupulously respect homologated prices. They were sealed in a move taken by the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, to check price hikes that could result from the measures set to combat the new coronavirus outbreak.

Prior of the step, some denizens of metropolitan Yaounde had already begun sounding an alarm that prices of some basic commodities were already skyrocketing.

At the Acacia market in Yaounde, things looked quite stable. Veronique Kamdem, a merchant who buys at the market and then resells at the neighbourhoods, said prices to stuff like rice, spaghetti and vegetables oil are yet to witness an increase. She rather regrets that home-produced goods are witnessing a slight increase in prices.

A shop owner, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, said many people are trooping to the markets to buy rice, and flower. “There is bound to be an increase in the prices of rice and other things like spaghetti, oil, flower and sugar as everyone wants to keep a reasonable stock at home”, the anonymous speaker hinted.

Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana and his team, have been making turns in markets with the aim of checking price hikes. Speaking shortly after proceeding to seal one of the warehouses in a neighbourhood in Yaounde, the Minister said it was outrageous that pain was inflicted on an already distressed population. “We have enough cereals in stock that can serve the population for the next four months. So there is absolutely no need for an increase in prices or panic,” Minister Atangana stressed.

Last week, the Trade Minister issued a strongly worded communiqué, promising what he qualified as “tough times” for whoever would dare defy the instructions to respect stipulated prices. By this move, the trade boss has matched words with action and hopes it serves as an example for other business persons. He used the Monday outing to reiterate the call for both brokers and consumers not to take advantage of an unfortunate situation. He reminded the public to make good use of the toll free number and report any suspected business deals.
