Sports and Physical Education Minister, Professor Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, has signed a contract with the Canadian Firm, Magil, for the construction of more parking lots in the stadium, audio-visual equipments and the maintenance of the stadium through the training of Cameroonians for a period of six months. The sports boss, who also doubles as the President of the Local Organising Committee of the CO-CAN 2020, signed the contract with Franck Mathiere, Magil’s Director of International Operations.
According to sources at MINSEP, the work execution is supposed to last for six months. With the postponement of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2020) till further notice, the works are an opportunity for further amelioration to be done on some stadiums which were to host the African football jamboree.
The Canadian firm, Magil, was the company in charge of giving a face-lift to the Douala Reunification Stadium in preparation for the 2020 CHAN. The task given to Magil was perfectly executed. The fast but efficient rate at which the Douala Reunification Stadium was done convinced the State to attribute the end of the Yaounde Olembe Sports Complex contract to the Magil firm. The contract was previously handled by the Piccini firm. The Douala Reunification Stadium was supposed to receive Group C matches of the 2020 CHAN. The group was made up of reigning champions Morocco, Togo, Rwanda and Uganda. The last fixture of the tournaments quarters-finals and the 3rd place match were equally supposed to be played on the stadium. One of the oldest stadiums in Cameroon and Africa, the Reunification Stadium, was built in 1972 and was used for the AFCON 1974 held in Cameroon.
